Increase health care coverage through infrastructure that improves and brings health services closer to the 3.2 million right holders of the Social Security in Guatemala

In April 2020, IGSS and UNOPS entered into the agreement for the implementation of the second phase of the Master Plan for the Modernization of Infrastructure and Hospital Equipment through UNOPS , to be developed between 2020 and 2025, which includes:

  • The design of the Hospital Complex of Zone 11 and of Hospital de Arrivillaga
  • Design and construction of the High Complexity Hospital with 300 beds and an area of 60 thousand m2 and of the Hospital Regional de Oriente in Zacapa, with 203 beds and 30 thousand m2, representing an investment close to 2 250 million
  • US$ 85 million in state-of-the-art medical equipment and an estimated of 100 ambulances, as well as its installation and training for its use and maintenance
  • US$ 40 million in technological infrastructure upgrade, implementing innovative systems such as Teleradiology and Telemedicine.

1st Phase of the Infrastructure Modernization Program and IGSS Hospital Equipment (2007-2014)

The first phase of the Master Plan for the modernization and expansion of the hospital network and services of IGSS was developed during the years 2007-2018 and it was trained with technical assistance from UNOPS for the construction, supply of equipment, and supervision of 17 hospitals in Guatemala City, Quetzaltenango, Sololá, Totonicapán, San Marcos, Huehuetenango, Quiché, Quetzaltenango, and Puerto Barrios, which allowed an approach to populations from vulnerable sectors of the country, to medical units of the Social Security, mainly in the highlands zone.

Results and benefits of INFRAIGSS

The expected result of the INFRAIGSS program is that the Social Security of Guatemala can have optimal health infrastructures to improve the capacity to respond to the 3.2 million rights holders and workers of the institution, fulfilling the objectives set out in the Institutional Master Plan.

To develop new infrastructures with high international standards under the approach of Safe Hospitals according to the criteria of PAHO/WHO, incorporating aspects of energy eco-efficiency, pandemic care and state-of-the-art equipment according to the complexity of the different medical specialties supplied by the IGSS health network.

With the support of INFRAIGSS program, the capacity of care in the metropolitan area of Guatemala City and in the areas of the highest growth and economic development of the country will increase, clearing medical and clinical units that have exceeded their capacity and assuring the sustainability of the investments that were made.

Strengthening of the information technology platform of IGSS for it to incorporates software, programs licensing, improving security levels in information management and automation; as well as the addition of new hardware, the achievement of international certifications for the computer center, the expansion of communications networks, training and continuous improvement of the staff.
