Guatemala’s Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS, by its acronym in Spanish) has joined UNOPS’ Regional Observatory for Medicine Prices as part of the agreement “Improving access to healthcare through alternative procurement of medicines, medical technology, and other supplies for Guatemala’s Public Health Network.” This event, attended by Health Minister Joaquín Barnoya and UNOPS Guatemala Director Andrea Calvaruso, reaffirms both institutions’ commitment to universal and equitable healthcare access, prioritizing transparent and efficient public management to benefit the Guatemalan population.
By joining the Observatory, MSPAS will enhance transparency in medicine procurement, thereby strengthening accountability in the health sector. This innovative UNOPS tool provides governments with precise and objective international price data from official sources in 21 countries, helping to establish fair price ranges. It also contributes to reducing the risk of corruption and fraud, preventing overpricing and promoting efficient use of resources.
The agreement signed between MSPAS and UNOPS, valued at up to 900 million USD, aims to optimize approximately 35% of public health procurement. Its implementation begins with an initial disbursement of 31 million USD to acquire essential medicines and medical supplies that MSPAS will allocate to primary care needs and the treatment of chronic and catastrophic illnesses. Selected medicines include antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and treatments for mental health, cancer, hypertension, and more.
Through its membership in the Observatory, MSPAS joins a network of government entities that share strategic information for the public sector and civil society, supporting public health decision-makers with immediate and objective data that promotes healthcare access for all.
By supporting over 23 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, UNOPS promotes fair and equitable public management that maximizes the sustainable value of public resources through practices rooted in efficiency, integrity, and transparency, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
